When the Moon Hatched: Characters, spice, review & triggers

When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker is an epic fantasy romance that will knock your socks off in its grandeur and lyrical prose. Consider my socks knocked (off).

The emotion, the story, the plot and the dragons are all incredible and I’m so proud to see our wonderful Kiwi (and Aussie) authors succeeding in the romantasy space. Yay for Aotearoa! (We see you too, Stacia Stark!)

Anyway, When the Moon Hatched was an incredible journey! I’ve written a When the Moon Hatched book review to explain in detail why and also included a character guide and recap for people looking to jog their memory before reading The Ballad of Falling Dragons. Not to mention trigger warnings, tropes and a few other bits and pieces.

I know that a lot of y’all are seeking info on the spice levels and spicy chapters. So scroll down to the FAQs and spoilers section of this post if that’s what you’re after. I’ve included a dragon guide in a separate post, because the dragons are co-stars and deserve their own page.

Otherwise, get ready to meet Raeve and Kaan and embark on an epic fantasy story that will tug at your heartstrings.

⚠️ Be aware that this guide is meant to be a little recap of When the Moon Hatched, so please be aware that reading the character guides and FAQs can be a spoiler.⚠️

Perhaps come back later if you haven’t read this book yet? Or spoil yourself, I’m not the boss of you ;)

Happy reading!

When the Moon Hatched synopsis.

The Creators did not expect their beloved dragons to sail skyward upon their end. To curl into balls just beyond gravity’s grip, littering the sky with tombstones. With moons.

They certainly did not expect them to fall.

As a valued Elding Blade of the rebellion group Fíur du Ath, Raeve’s job is to kill. To complete orders and never get caught. When a renowned bounty hunter is employed by The Crown to capture a member of the Ath, Raeve’s world is turned upside down. Blood spills, hearts break, and Raeve finds herself at the mercy of the Guild of Nobles—a group of dual-beaded elementals who intend to turn her into a political statement. Only death will set her free.

Crushed beneath a mourning weight, Kaan Vaegor took the head of a king and donned his melted crown. Now on a tireless quest to assuage the never-ebbing ache in his chest, his hunt for a moonshard lures him into the belly of Gore’s notorious prison where he stumbles upon something that rips apart his perception of reality. A shackled miracle with eyes full of rage and blood on her hands.

The echo of the past sings louder than the Creators themselves, and even Raeve can’t ignore the truths blaring at her from a warmer, happier time.

However.

There’s more to this song than meets the eye, and some truths …

They’re too poisonous to swallow.

When the Moon Hatched is a fast-paced fantasy romance for fans of witty banter and strong, sassy protagonists. Beneath the cover is an immersive, vibrant world with mysterious creatures, a unique magic system, and a love that blazes through the ages.

When the Moon Hatched is narrated from a first person point of view, from four perspectives, plus an epilogue narrated in third-person perspective from a new character.

  • Primary narrator: Raeve, our female main character

  • Secondary narrator: Kaan Vaegor, our male main character

  • Third narrator to a lesser degree: Veya Vaegor, a major supporting character and Kaan’s sister.

  • Diary entries: Elluin Nevan

  • Epilogue: Arkyn Vaegor

Main characters.

Raeve and Kaan Vaegor, are our two main characters in When the Moon Hatched, supplemented by Veya Vaegor and Elluin Nevan’s diary entries.

Raeve.

Character art shared by author @sarah.a.parker.author & artist @artbysteffani via Instagram

Raeve is an assassin  (“Elding Blade”) for a group of rebels, known as the Fiur Du Ath. Not just any assassin, though. She can harness the power of the goddess Clode, with her affinity for wind. The only problem is, she can’t remember her past. Her only clue to her past is a sentient magically animated paper aeroplane named ‘Nee’ and the flashbacks of memories and feelings that come back to her throughout the story. And what’s the significance of her attachment to the moon?

Kaan Vaegor.

Character art shared by author @sarah.a.parker.author & artist @adamszkiart via Instagram

Kaan Vaegor is the King of the Burn. Initially, we meet him as a mysterious hooded guy who is on a quest to collect rare objects and chances upon Raeve singing and subsequently upon her being locked up in prison, scheduled to be executed. What’s his draw to her?

Elluin Neván

Short diary entries from a girl named Elluin Neván intersperse parts of the story of When the Moon Hatched. Who is she and what’s her story and what is the meaning of these diary entries? How is it relevant to the plot? Trust the process, is all I will say :)

Veya Vaegor.

Technically a supporting major character, Veya Vaegor is Kaan’s sister and Princess of the Burn. We get her point of view and narration in a couple of chapters, providing backstory and viewpoints to enrich the emotional gut punch of the storyline.

Fantasy creature characters (including mentioned names).

Thanks to the glossary at the back of the book, I’ve been able to compile a fantasy creature table describing some of the non-fae creatures we come across in the epic journey of When the Moon Hatched. All credit to the author, Sarah A. Parker, for this dictionary of sorts, that will be sure to help readers understand the magnificent magical creatures in this world.

Creature Name Description
The Fate Herder A large silver feline-like creature that is more legend than reality. Those who have seen it are often considered unstable or delusional, boasting stories about the beast nudging them to make a different decision than the one they intended.
Velvet Trogg Large lanky creatures that like to hoard and feed on trash. With four arms, long black hair and blue velvet skin, they consume memories from the bits of trash they eat and purge them as luminous sticky tendrils they pull from gaping holes in their hands, using these tendrils to decorate their lairs.
Octimar The Octimar we meet in When the Moon Hatched is described as such: “The bulbous creature’s skin is a mottle of icy shades, allowing it to blend almost entirely with our surroundings, its numerous vine-like appendages coiled around a mound of gold piled before it. No eyes. Just a tumorous head, the skin thin enough to garner a view through to its large, luminous brain that’s throbbing a little.”
Miskunn A knee-height creature with white hair and complexion, buttony features and sharp teeth. They have willowy bodies that fold up like a marsupial, and long tufted tails. They can see into the future, though these visions are sporadic and subject to change.
Parchment Lark Not technically a magical creature, but included here from Parker’s glossary: “Runed squares of parchment that have activation lines. Once folded into the shape of a lark, these notes will flutter to the one the message is intended for.”

When the Moon Hatched: Gods and goddesses recap.

A handy cheat sheet of the When the Moon Hatched Gods and Goddesses, their elemental affinities and magic, and their elemental bead colors that people wear to show if they can hear any elemental songs. The glossary states: “There are different fashions for different kingdoms. In The Fade, they are worn as earrings. In The Burn or The Shade, they adorn the wearer’s hair, beard or garb.”

God / Goddess Name Affinity Bead (or stone)
Caelis God of Aether Black aether stone in a diadem that fuses to the head of the wearer
Bulder God of Ground Brown
Rayne Goddess of Water Blue
Clode Goddess of Air Clear
Ignos God of Fire Red

My rating: ★★★★☆

  • Spice level: 🌶🌶 .5

  • 2.5/5, slow-burn, open-door spice, but it doesn’t overshadow the plot or storytelling.

I stab a glare at a page buttoned with florid whorls of flowery adjectives, honeyed adverbs and sighing metaphors, where every wailing, wandering sentence, every unsuspecting noun is spangled with ornamental language, teetering on the precipice of nonsensical decadence.

However, as I cast my gaze at the torrential sentences, I feel the initial bulb of my apprehension towards the writing style soften, split and transform into a seed of warm delight that sprouts serpentine tendrils which creep past the barbed, spiky defences surrounding the thumping organ in my chest.

(Even though the writing was overly ornate and sometimes made super weird choices, I really ended up enjoying the story.)

Also, within the first 6% of this story, the FMC dismembers and executes a child abuser & predator. 😌💅 I'm in.

Kyzari is Princess of the Shade, current bearer and wearer of the Aether stone and Elluin Nevan/Raeve’s daughter.

In chapter 13 of When the Moon Hatched, Kyzari sneaks away to meet Kaan Vaegor. He refers to her as his niece and both seem to think that her biological father is King Tyroth Vaegor. Kyzari tells Kaan that she can hear and speak to the god Caelis, and that she’s in love with him.

Kaan Vaegor is actually Kyzari’s biological father, though it’s probable that neither of them knows it, although we’ll find out how much Kaan knows in book two, possibly.

Nee, the sentient parchment letter with a big personality, was in fact penned by Kyzari, to her believed to be dead mother, Elluin Nevan/Raeve.

The Other is a part of Raeve that emerges when she’s undergoing extreme distress or trauma. The Other emerges and takes over Raeve’s consciousness while she kind of “blacks out” to a degree. Who is Liri in When the Moon Hatched?

Liri is a Moonplume dragon, whose was forcibly “bonded” by Rekk Zharos, a heinous fae who tortured and abused her. Raeve saves Liri and promises her that no one will ever hurt her again.

Who is Elluin Nevan?

Elluin Neván is revealed to be Raeve.
