When the Moon Hatched dragons: Types, names & descriptions
If you, like me, get really excited when fantasy and romantasy book has dragons and you adore When the Moon Hatched, then welcome. You’re in the right place to refresh your memory about all the dragons and their lore in this world.
Sarah A. Parker gave us a rich world of epic dragon fantasy romance, yet also amazing layers upon layers of lore and history. And that’s how it should be done, in my opinion. From fascinating nesting rituals, to species personality traits of our scaly, leathery and plumed pals, appearance and descriptions plus all the dragons and their names, as well as their riders. It’s quite a lot to be honest.
So, instead of pretending I memorised all of this on my first read, I put together this dragon guide. Call it a refresher, a recap or an appreciation post. I’m not really sure but who cares.
Anyways, happy When the Moon Hatched dragon appreciation recap guide reading!
When the Moon Hatched: Dragon types, descriptions, traits & nesting.
From icy, elusive Moonplumes to lava-loving Sabersythes and the colorful and more approachable Moltenmaws, this is your cheat sheet to dragon types and what they look like, who bites and who you should definitely 100% not try to steal an egg from. Just for the record… stealing eggs is absolutely not cool, we don’t endorse animal captivity or egg stealing. You’re a terrible person if you steal a dragon egg or are cruel to dragons in any way, shape or form.
But I digress.
Anyway, all this information I found in the glossary at the end of the book, so it’s straight from the dragon's mouth.
| Dragon Type | Dragon Description | Personality Traits | Nesting Grounds | Nest Structure | Hatching Process |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moonplume | Leathery, luminous skin that comes in shades of pearl, iridescent and white. Their eyes are big, black and glitter, their faces rounded, necks long, bodies elegant. Their tails are long, like brushes of silken strands. They are cold-loving creatures and they can’t handle the sun or their skin burns, nor do their eyes adapt to such brightness. | They’re very cunning and are therefore the hardest dragon to steal an egg from. | Netheryn, situated in The Shade, at the southernmost pole of the world. Here, the bitterly cold environment is inhospitable to most folk. | The Moonplumes nest on giant hexagon pillars of ice. | Once their eggs begin to rock, the paternal Moonplume will either blow its icy flames upon the eggs or pack ice and snow atop them, a vital part of the hatching process. |
| Saberscythe | Sabersythes are large boxy creatures with scales, spikes and heavily tusked faces. They come in many different colors, such as rust, bronze, red, brown, black and gold. They’re heat loving creatures and can’t survive for long in the fierce cold of The Shade. | Sabersythes can be very boisterous and aggressive and are almost as hard to charm or steal an egg from as the Moonplumes are. | Gondragh is the name of the Saberythe nesting grounds situated in The Burn. It’s directly beneath the sun where it is very hot and uninhabitable for most folk. Very rocky, with lots of volcanoes and rivers of lava. | Sabersythes nest within the nooks and hollows of volcanoes. | Once their eggs begin to rock, they either scoop lava from the volcanoes and spit it into the nests or douse the nests in dragonflame, a vital part of the hatching process. |
| Moltenmaw | Moltenmaws are covered in a vibrant mix of colourful plumage and no two Moltenmaws bear the same colour palette. With sharp and beaked faces, they can travel anywhere in the world. | Moltenmaws are the easiest dragons to charm or steal an egg from. | Bhoggith is the Moltenmaw nesting grounds and located in The Fade, a vast stretch of boggy wasteland. | There are stable mounds the Moltenmaws form their nests on top of, building great circular globes from trees and branches and laying their eggs within. | Once their eggs begin to rock, the paternal Moltenmaw blows flame upon the structure. A vital part of the hatching process. |

Dragon names, types and riders.
There’s a lot of characters to remember in When the Moon Hatched. But on top of that, we meet plenty of dragons and let’s be so for real, they’re often the highlight, am I right?
That’s why, I’ve included a table of the dragons and their names, their type/species/classification as well as who their riders are.
Important to note that dragons having a rider, doesn’t mean they share a bond. In fact, Parker’s glossary states:
Daga-Morrk. A daga-morrk is one so bonded with their dragon, that they can harness its strength and fire. This connection is more myth than reality.
| Dragon Name | Dragon Type | Rider |
|---|---|---|
| Rygun | Saberscythe | King Kaan Vaegor |
| Nathae | Moonplume | Ahdrik or Eudora Nevan (Elluin’s Mah and Pah) |
| Allume | Moonplume | Haedon Nevan (Elluin’s brother) |
| Akkeri | Moonplume | Ahdrik or Eudora Nevan (Elluin’s Mah and Pah) |
| Slátra. | Moonplume | Elluin Neván |
| Grohn | Saberscythe | Ostern Vaegor (Kaan’s father) |
| Ahra | Great Silver Saberscythe | N/A |
| Liri | Moonplume | Originally used and abused by Rekk Zharos. Saved by Raeve. |
| Bruus | Moltenmaw | Terros |
