Brimstone: Characters, spice levels & chapters, triggers + spoilers
What did you all think of Brimstone by Callie Hart?
There was lots to unpack following the events of Quicksilver, that’s for sure. And what about that ending?!
Anyway, in this post, I’m breaking down the Brimstone synopsis and book characters, pinpointing all the Brimstone spicy chapters whether you want to avoid them or head straight there. Additionally, I’ve rated the spice levels per chapter, penned a brief review, and flagged trigger and content warnings.
Enjoy. And happy reading, as always!
Brimstone synopsis.
Duty. Blood. Honour. Power.
Saeris Fane doesn't want power. The very last thing she needs is her name whispered on an entire court's lips, but now that she's been crowned queen of the Blood Court, she's discovering that a queen's life is not her own. A heavy weight rests upon her shoulders.
Her ward - and her brother - need her back in her homeland . . . but the changes that have strengthened Saeris have also made her weak. Born under blazing suns, Saeris will surely die if she makes her way home through the Quicksilver. Which means that, once again, she must send someone else in her stead . . .
'Keep your mouth shut. Stick to the shadows. And for the love of all seven Gods, do NOT crack any jokes.'
Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate has defeated armies and survived all manner of horrors, but traveling back to Zilvaren with Carrion Swift might just be the death of him. The male just will not shut up. Hidden dangers await them down the narrow alleyways of the Silver City. Unfolding secrets pose impossible threats. Fisher must wrangle the smuggler and accomplish his goals quickly if he wants to see his mate again.
A darkness falls across Yvelia. The realm and their friends are in danger. Together, Saeris and Fisher will pass through fire and brimstone to save them.
Brimstone characters.
Brimstone is narrated from a first person point of view, from both Saeris Fane and Kingfisher’s perspective.
Here is a breakdown of our two main characters, followed by a list of all Brimstone characters we meet in the book two of the Fae & Alchemy series.

Saeris Fane.
Saeris Fane really grows a lot in Brimstone. Well, not literally, but mentally, emotionally and er… rune-wise. Iykyk. But also, she goes on a journey of learning and discovery. Says the word “mate” a lot. Gets jiggy with Kingfisher a lot. Has some cool weaponry. Has a cool fox. You know, all that jazz.
Kingfisher.
Kingfisher still has one of the dirtiest mouths of a fae dude I’ve ever read, yet he’s down so bad for his girlfriend mate, Saeris, that he also acts like a possessive newly wed and I love that for him. He spouts pretty intense poetry in all honestly. A lot of questions arise about Kingfisher in Brimstone. For example, what’s Kingfisher’s real name? You’re going to have to read the book to find out. (Or if you can’t be bothered, scroll to the bottom of this page to the FAQ spoilers section).

Spice level: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
4/5, moderate to hot spice
I had a lot of fun reading this but I had a couple of things that made it not quite a perfect read.
Firstly, every woman in this book who is not Saeris or a dead/comatose relation to Kingfisher seems to fall into one of three categories: Evil Rival, Hostile or could have been interesting but is an undercooked NPC.
Can we also talk about Danya? When the poor love literally got attacked and set on fire by a zombie vampire thing and has just recovered and explains why she looks the way she does to Saeris, Saeris says, “Oh, I thought it was an edgy self-expression thing.” Saeris, mate… read the room.
That said, I really did enjoy this. Truly. It was still a good time. My 3 stars are for Carrion Swift and Onyx. And that ending was a straight punch to the solar plexus, mate.
If you loved it, I’m here for you, good for you.

Spice level: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
4/5, moderate to scorching hot spice, explicitly detailed. In my opinion, it’s spicier than Quicksilver.
What are the Brimstone spicy chapters?
Whether you’re spice-averse, spice-curious, or fully committed to reading with a fire extinguisher nearby, I’ve mapped out Brimstone spicy chapters for you.
We’re talking a highly subjective spice scale, ranging from capsicum for mild, more capsicum for non explicit but mild and chilli for hot and more explicit. Here’s where all the steamy kissing and spice action lives.
Chapter 7, “Home”: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
Chapter 20, “Huntsman”: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
Chapter 29, “Fortunes of the Universe”: 🌶🌶
Chapter 32, “The Thing About Leaning”: 🌶

Where can I read Kingfisher’s POV bonus chapters?
You can read Kingfisher’s POV bonus chapters for FREE on Callie Hart’s website, right here.
Do I need to read Kingfisher’s POV chapters before Brimstone?
Yes, I’d highly suggest you should read Kingfisher’s POV chapters before Brimstone. There is information in these chapters that really affects the contextual knowledge in Brimstone, for example, of Kingfisher’s godsword, Nimerelle and events of the past with the Ajun gate.
Does Onyx die in Brimstone?
Yes, Onyx dies in Brimstone whilst trying to save Saeris and Kingfisher’s life and it’s heartbreaking. HOWEVER… Saeris refuses to accept his death. She summons the Hazrax and asks them about death. They confirm Onyx’ soul is still with them, sitting by their feet in fact. (Sob). Saeris uses all her rune magic and pours it into Onyx to bring him back to life, whilst nearly dying in the process herself. But she doesn’t die either. And Onyx comes back from the dead. No need to stress guys!
Who is Zovena in Brimstone?
Zovena, is a Lord of Midnight and the Keeper of Missives, in the Blood Court (you know, vampires etc). She was loyal to Malcolm and after Malcolm’s death, she also wants to claim the crown. But Saeris claims the crown. So yeah, she’s not exactly happy with Saeris. She’s also a bit mean in general.
Does Archer die in Brimstone?
No while Archer comes close to death after being attacked by a rogue feeder, he doesn’t die in Brimstone. He is saved as his fellow fire sprite community help contribute “life'“ to bring him back to full health.
